Have you ever thought about the kids who like to play hockey (like me!) and go to OJCS that doesn’t have a team? We can’t play hockey during the school day with school friends, we play hockey after school so we don’t have time for homework or hanging out with OJCS friends.
Hi I’m Reuven . Mr. C and Dr.Mitz better listen up, I am about to let you know why the OJCS should have its own RAMS HOCKEY TEAM! My three main reasons are that you will develop the skills to play with a team, develop the learning skill of collaboration and playing hockey teaches perseverance. According to cbc.ca, 40 percent of NHL players played grade4 hockey.
Aycane .com, says ‘hockey is more than just a game played on ice; it’s a cultural phenomenon that has the power to bring communities together, inspire individuals, and create lasting bonds.’
I hope you understand that hockey truly does bring people together . For example, my team from this year keeps on getting together even though the season is coming to an end. My team manager keeps us together with activities.
In fact, a few weeks ago we got together for four on four scrimmage to stay together and maintain our bond during the off season.
Another way that hockey is important it’s that it brings people together from different backgrounds. In the NHL there are different players from different backgrounds like Devon Levi a goalie for the Sabers who is Jewish, Zach Hyman who’s also Jewish , Nasem Kadri who’s muslim and Carey Price who’s part indigenous. They all play together in the same league and their differences don’t matter!
This teaches young players to just play the game no matter who you’re playing against . On my team, we have different players from different cultural and religious backgrounds. Working as a team allows us to better understand and respect people’s differences. So if we had an OJCS hockey team, it would develop good group work and we could get to know different school teams and their players.
Secondly crosslinkcountysportsplex.com says that ‘Teamwork is a crucial skill in life. Being a part of a team, contributing to the success of the team’ . Team also stands for Together Everyone Achieves More . Which I think makes you work more effectively.
An example of this is Wayne Gretzky had more assists than goals in his career . That means he was a true team player. It also should make me think how I can be like Wayne Gretzkey when I am working in group work in school . In school students should help each other be successful because it is important to get together and work as a team in school.
Last but not least, my third point from ‘ pointstreak.com says. Good discipline for players and teams is critical for proper performance and progression.’ Which I think means there’s always room for improvement and good discipline means you are always working towards being your best. I must say that I continue to improve throughout the season because I have good discipline.
Things like trying harder when playing, if a play doesn’t work, I am advising my team on what I noticed went wrong and how we can fix it. Not to brag but at an away tournament in Petawawa I got two shutouts in a row . At the start of the season I couldn’t catch most pucks. Also like Cole Caufield who is shorter than your average NHL player and pushes through his disadvantages. This should make kids think to play to your disadvantage.
Having an OJCS hockey team would give students something to be excited and proud of school spirit and pride to the school . Students would develop teamwork and leadership skills as well as learning to persevere and disciplined.
Dr. Mitz and Mr. C if you listened and agreed with me that’s great. But if not, here are some last thoughts – how would we get a goalie? , How would we get players? Those are questions that are easy for me to answer. For the goalie, well I’m a goalie. We should do double cohort’s starting with the biggest cohort and I know we would have lots of players! For example, my brother, two to three kids in grade 3, one kid at least in grade two, two kids in grade 5, 2 kids in grade six. Already, we have one team there! This would also bring people who don’t play into the sport.
I know Mr.C coaches competitively, my dad would coach too … Dr Mitz, all that is left to say is GO RAMS GO!
